Celebrating the life of Mrs. Willie Pearl Porter- A Century Well Lived

Mrs. Willie Pearl Porter was a member of the Black Nurses Association, Miami and believed to be the oldest NBNA member before her passing.MrsPorter completed her nursing training in 1935 from the Freedman’s Hospital School of Nursing in Washington, D.C. MrsPorter was firmly convinced that education is the key to a successful career, she continued her education earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology from Florida A&M University and her Master of Science degree in Medical and Surgical Nursing at Indiana University, Bloomington,  IN. MrsPorter had a stellar career in nursing education, as a public health nurse, and a school nurse and health instructor for the College High School, Lucy Moton, where she worked for 28 years. MrsPorter retired in 1973 having taught many years at the Miami Senior High School.  MrsPorter received the “Award of Excellence” from the Black Nurses Association, Miami in 2008 and she was inducted in the Florida International University Archives for Nursing in 2007. MrsPorter passed from this earthly realm on March 15,2017. Mrs. Willie Pearl Porter lived her life giving, sharing, motiving, educating, encouraging nurses and nursing students.  She had great love for her husband, her children and family, her chapter members, NBNA and the profession of nursing.
